HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PETS

Halloween can be a time of fun and fantasy for youngsters, but a nightmare for pets if extra precautions are not observed for their safety. Here are some tricks provided by the Valley Oak SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) that will help make this holiday a treat for your pet.

  • Cloister your kitty! Keep cats and shy pets in a separate, safe area of your house during the hours that trick - or - treaters visit. Pets may be frightened by people in costumes. Also, your cat or small dog may slip outside unnoticed if you are not careful. If this possibility exists, keep your pet(s) in a quiet room throughout the evening.
  • One person's candy may be your pet's poison! Chocolate, for instance, is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep all candy and treats out of their reach. Remember: Pets can choke on candy wrappers and cats in particular like to chew on cellophane, which can result in some serious internal problems if ingested.
  • Lights out! Some animals, especially cats, are enchanted by a flame. If you have a jack-o-lantern with a candle inside, make sure your pets cannot get to it, minimizing the chances that it may be knocked over and your pet is burned or a fire is started.
  • Round-em-up! Again, make sure during the hours that trick-or-treaters are out and about, your pet(s) are safe and well-protected from pranksters. Be particularly careful if you own a black cat, making sure your midnight beauty does not become the target for overzealous revelers or cult followers.

And make sure your furry friend wears a license and ID tag all year 'round-any dog or cat can become lost at any time!
